VANCOUVER, British Columbia — For the record, it was Christoffer Svae’s idea.
A Norwegian curler, he wanted to “spice up” his team’s drab uniform. So instead of settling for the customary black curler’s pants, he went online and bought five loud pairs of golf pants.
Red, white and blue argyle.
“We didn’t really want to play in gray and black for Norway,” he said. “Gray and red, white and blue? That’s O.K.”
The Norwegian men’s curling team unveiled its new look at practice Saturday afternoon. Other teams soon took notice.
“They’re interesting, to say the least,” said John Benton, a member of the United States team.
Well within earshot of the Norwegians, he added, “But pant colors in no way determines who wins.”
Curling is a team sport, requiring communication and trust. But Svae didn’t inform his teammates about the fashion statement until the pants arrived.
“As soon as they got there, they really didn’t have a choice,” he said, smiling. “It happens.”
The team plays its first argyle game Tuesday against Canada. But don’t count on spotting Svae wearing them around downtown Vancouver.
“Just on ice,” he said. “You think you would dance with me in this?”
